What Season Is This (What Child is This/Greensleeves)

What Season Is This (What Child is This/Greensleeves)

This melody started somewhere and became Greensleeves – or maybe originated with Greensleeves. Then someone’s like, “hey, let’s use it for our celebratory religious purposes.” In keeping with that tradition, I’ve done the same. On one hand, Greensleeves is not a religious song, so secular lyrics are right there, but I had too much fun making it into a winter song.

What season reaches us with hands

Which, frozen, rest on our shoulders

And chills our nose and hands and toes

As blustery days grow colder

This this is wintertime

The kinglet song, so sublime

Praise, praise this wonderland

The quietly darkened season

While sheltered from the chill I lie

In crystals that fell from over head

My downy shroud felt like a cloud

As snowflakes dance, elated

This this is wintertime

Cloudy crystals about us fly

Praise, praise this wonderland

The quietly darkened season

Across the icy dance floor skate,

A scratching rhythm is pealing.
the speeding pace of a sledding race

Can numb the pain we are feeling
This this is wintertime

On sledding hills we slide and climb

Praise, praise this wonderland

The quietly darkened season

Sing, Sing our winter song

Sing through the night so long

Joy, Joy this frozen chapter

The quietly darkened season
