Sing We Now of Winter (Sing We Now of Christmas)

Sing We Now of Winter (Sing We Now of Christmas)

According to Choristers Guild's website, this Christmas carol was written in the 15th century as a New Year’s Carol.

I contemplated making this about February specifically, since that’s when the sap rises – toward the end at least. Imbolc/Candlemas/Groundhog Day is halfway between the solstice referenced in the first verse and the spring Equinox in March, but I didn’t mention it specifically in the song. The first verse starts the song at the solstice and the song finishes with the rising of sap to span more of the whole season, rather than just February.

Sing we now of winter

The dark is halfway past

Solstice day has risen,

The warmth will come at last

Sing winter's song, Sing all season long

Sing we now of winter, sing all season long.

Tell the ones who toil

"leave those tasks to rest,

Journey to the kitchen

These homemade treats are best"

Sing winter's song, Sing all season long

Sing we now of winter, sing all season long

Walking through the country

Behold the Holly Tree

Bearing fruit of scarlet

The glory is plain to see

Sing winter's song, Sing all season long

Sing we now of winter, sing all season long

The only thing I took were

Photos of splendid space

The footprints that I left

Were the one and only trace

Sing winter's song, Sing all season long

Sing we now of winter, sing all season long

Sugarmakers waiting

For the sap to rise

The crystal-clear liquid

Yields such a sweet surprise

Sing winter's song, Sing all season long

Sing we now of winter, sing all season long
